With this goal, the seven-time Ballon D'or winner has become Argentina's all-time highest goal-scorer in the history of the World Cup. This was the 35-year-old footballer's 11th goal in the history of the global tournament.

Messi has played for his national team in 25 games of the FIFA World Cup. Argentina’s captain broke Gabriel Batistura’s record of 10 goals and is now the top goal scorer for his country in the history of the tournament.

However, Messi is now tied with Hungarian footballer Sandor Kocsis and German footballer Jurgen Klinsmann with 11 goals.

Messi has now scored a total of five goals in the 2022 edition of the World Cup and has tied alongside French footballer Kylian Mbappe for the Golden Boot which is awarded to the highest goalscorer of a particular FIFA World Cup tournament.
